What's happening with the Incorporation of Montauk

Members,  thanks for your support in the effort to fight the Incorporation of Montauk.    At this point the effort seems to have lost steam and we are not seeing much in the press on this topic.  However,  we need to monitor this activity and be prepared to take action when the Incorporation campaign comes back to life -- which we think it will.  We don't believe the Incorporation of Montauk is the right direction and in the best interest of our community.   We are ready to stand and fight on this issue.   We hope you will be with us when the time comes.

Below is information we shared with you several years ago.

MBPOA ALERT:  Incorporation of Montauk 2005

Dear Member,

We, your friends and neighbors of Hither Hills, need your help at this time.

There is a group of very influential business people in Montauk that want to have Montauk become an Incorporated Village. They have sent out two different mailing that you might have received at this time.  DO NOT BE FOOLED.   While the mailings would seem to indicate that they have your best interest at heart, it’s really about making Montauk more commercial.

FACT:  34.9 acres of beach front property that we own as an association will be lost if Montauk becomes and incorporated Village. This is stipulated in our deed of 1942 with the Mirror Holding Corp.

FACT:  Your property value will go down between 20-30% as validated by Real Estate professionals in Montauk.

FACT: Your Taxes will go up 30 to 50% to receive the same level of services you now receive from the Town of East Hampton.

FACT:  Zoning laws will be relaxed to appease local business interest.

FACT:  The quality of life in Montauk will be compromised

FACT:  We already voiced our opinion back in 1996 when we voted NO by a three to one margin against incorporation.

Information to consider and carefully review...

John French, a representative of the Montauk incorporation committee made a presentation of the proposed village budget on Monday, June 7th, 2004 to the Montauk Citizens Advisory Committee.  Mr. French assured the Committee that the same level of service would be maintained in the incorporated village of Montauk as we now receive from the town. He estimated that there would only be a 1.9% increase in taxes.
We believe there is a problem with that statement as there are a number of substantial services in the budget that we think have not been factored in.  The Police Department budget as presented did not include health insurance, workmen's compensation, retirement, longevity pay, or uniform allowance to name a few.    With the amount budgeted of $1,117,000.00, Mr. French is short by at least $1,4000,00.00, just to receive the same services that we now enjoy. Police protection is the first line of defense to maintain our quality of life. It should not be short changed.
You are urged to get a copy of the proposed budget and understand what is and is not included and any short comings like the ones identified above.
Your Board.
